Ammonia Refrigeration Specialist / Senior Utilities Refrigeration Engineer
Role Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems while driving equipment reliability, predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role plays a critical part in maintaining uninterrupted utilities for food production operations.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain high standards of ammonia refrigeration safety and process safety management.
- Conduct risk assessments and support emergency response preparedness.
- Ensure compliance with Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and contractor safety procedures.
- Promote compliance with company policies and industrial refrigeration standards.
Operations & Technical Support
- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Maintain and support:
- Screw compressors
- Evaporative condensers
- Pump recirculation systems
- Ammonia vessels and receivers
- Heat exchangers
- Chilled and refrigerated water distribution systems
- Diagnose equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions.
Planned & Predictive Maintenance
- Develop and enhance preventive maintenance programs and shutdown plans.
- Apply predictive maintenance techniques including vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic inspection, and compressor condition monitoring.
- Support reliability improvement initiatives using Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve refrigeration performance and reduce energy consumption.
- Optimize system efficiency by monitoring refrigeration performance and Coefficient of Performance (COP).
- Analyze SCADA, PLC, BMS, and CMMS data to identify recurring failures and improvement opportunities.
- Support asset lifecycle planning and reliability enhancement projects.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or Technical Diploma in Refrigeration Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Utilities Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience with industrial ammonia (NH₃) refrigeration systems.
- Experience in food manufacturing, dairy, beverage, cold storage, meat processing, pharmaceutical, chemical processing, or similar industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of industrial refrigeration equipment, chilled water systems, and reliability engineering.
- Experience using SAP PM or other CMMS systems, along with SCADA, PLC, or BMS platforms.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Certifications
The following certifications are highly desirable:
- RETA (CARO, CIRO, CRES, or CRST)
- IIAR Training
- NEBOSH or IOSH
- OEM training from GEA, Mayekawa (Mycom), Howden, Sabroe, Johnson Controls, or equivalent manufacturers
